Normanski shares his memories on when he came to West Berlin for the first time 23 years ago as a little boy: Today is a special day. 23 years ago I’ve been the 1st time to West Berlin and the West in general. I still do remember this day like it was yesterday. We went there in a Trabant which is the typical stinki East German car. We stopped at the boarder to have a quick ID check and those promotion people started to hand out to all the adults a package of cigarettes, bananas and some candy for me.
If you knew East Berlin as I know it: Prenzlauer Berg was totally grey, with houses that looked like World War 2 has just been over since a week (ok not all houses but a fuckin lot). You would have been as surprised as I was as a boy back than, entering the West….it smelled so different over there and it was very colourful and also very very packed !!! We picked up the 100 Deutsch Marks from the bank that every Ossi (East German) received as a welcome present and (it felt like it took 5 hours) and then we finally went shopping.
Of course I remember what was the first thing my mum bought me: an RC car“ But with a cable 🙁 I was not so happy about it as I was supposed to be, actually it sucked, cause mum only spent 20 bugs on it to keep kept the rest for herself…..oh and some more candy’s for me of course. My parents bought a Hifi stereo machine which included double tape radio and record player…I remember that the quality of it was quite shitty. All in all it was a great experience.
I just wanted to share my memorys with you. Above you see a pic of some handwritings that went down between my red sock (means communist) teacher and my mum the next day. My teacher was quite upset cause I havent been to school that day. Sadly not all of you can read it, cause it is German. It is more or less about how sad it is that my mum didn’t make me go to school and follow the rules. My mum replied that the teacher shouldn’t punish me cause it was my mum who decided to make me not going. So funny. And also a bit weird that I do have the so called mum booklet still. Fun historical piece.
